The Municipal Antiquarium of Carassai, reorganized in 2008 in its new location on the first floor of the Palazzo Comunale (town hall), collects findings from the territory dating from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. The core of the collection, consisting of about 400 artifacts, focuses on the materials found in the necropolis of Sant'Agata and in the areas of Rocca Monte Varmine and San Vito. The most interesting findings concern the Picene period, especially during the 7th and 6th centuries BC, and the Roman period. Bronze jewelery, jewels, domestic instruments and pottery, coins and funerary epigraphs are exhibited, documenting the long occupation of the Carassai territory over the centuries.

Narra la legenda che l’antico popolo dei Piceni arrivò dalla Sabina (regione montuosa tra Lazio, Umbria e Abruzzo) e si stabilì nel territorio ascolano seguendo il volo di un picchio, uccello sacro a Marte. Qui fondarono la loro capitale, l’odierna Ascoli Piceno, e occuparono tutto il territorio delle vallate del Tronto e del Tesino e, sulla costa, fondarono un grande santuario, dedicato alla dea picena Cupra. Questo itinerario vi condurrà in alcuni dei borghi più belli d’Italia, la cui storia affonda le radici negli antichi villaggi piceni.
