Corinaldo

The church of Santa Maria in Portuno, in the Madonna del Piano district, is situated at the foot of the hill on which stands the medieval center of Corinaldo. The site had already seen human activity in ancient times before the Romans built brick and ceramic workshops, probably pertinent to a small settlement. In the early Middle Ages the area was occupied by the monastery of Saint Marie que dicitur in Portuno. In Roman times the church had three naves, with polygonal apses and crypts, whereas today the church has only a single nave as a result of changes made during the Renaissance. Inside the church a small antiquarium has been set up, where a selection of archaeological materials from the site and the surrounding area is displayed recounting daily life in those times. In the square in front of the religious building you can see some remains of Renaissance buildings pertinent to an hospitium, a place to host pilgrims.
