On the ground floor of Palazzo dei Capitani, an imposing building located in the main square of Ascoli Piceno, erected between 13th and 14th century to host the city's institutions, there is the archaeological site discovered during the restoration of the Palazzo in 1982. The area is characterized by a stratigraphic palimpsest ranging from the late Republican Age to the Middle Ages. The structures of the Roman era are related to a public area adjacent to the forum where an indoor market and some houses were built. This area of the city, developed starting from the Republican era, was completely restored in the Imperial Age with the creation of a large paved area in opus spicatum. The stratigraphy also shows traces of the devastation following the defeat of Asculum during the Social Wars against Rome. The clear overlapping of structures and different floorings, arriving down to the earliest version of the Palace, make the archaeological area one of a kind, an exceptional document for understanding the urban evolution of Ascoli. The area, featuring pedestrian walkways and instructional panels, also includes an exhibition of the finds recovered during excavations.
